I wish to take this opportunity to say that progress was made for the prevention of incidents/accidents involving Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV).

The inspection conducted by the GSPS and authorities (Apr.3-5) hopefully will be conducted more frequently and hopefully other municipalities and cities will follow the same path (one being Cochrane, Ont., where CMV traffic is enormous).

During the blitz, 87 CMVs were inspected for various deficiencies, such as poor maintenance, improper documents, daily safety checks and driver sobriety. With that, 42 charges were laid as a result.

It was not mentioned that impairment was a factor, but GSPS did mention that there is zero tolerance for drug/alcohol consumption while operating a CMV, which falls under the A-F class licence and also includes road building equipment.

Being a safety professional, whenever a hazard arises, the plan of action is to find the root cause and to eliminate the hazard.

By conducting routine inspections, this is a sure way in making our highways safer and having experienced/responsible operators on our roadways.

Hopefully, the day comes where our highways are free of the "cancer" of unsafe driving practices by CMV operators. Safely being able to drive from Point A to Point B will be comforting knowing that the authorities have made it safe to do so.
