YES Theatre Young Company opens its acclaimed kids’ show, One Small Step, at Sudbury Theatre Centre May 11.

The Canadian-born show, all about astronaut Chris Hadfield, has been in rehearsals since February, guided by YES Theatre mainstay April Perrin.

Perrin starred in Matilda the Musical and was responsible for the choreography for the hit show Jersey Boys.

“It’s been so thrilling working with the kids of the Young Company for the last three years,” she said.

“This is an amazing and important investment in our community, in our youth and in the future of the arts in Sudbury. An interest and love for the arts starts young and this is our way of giving these kids training on their feet (which also happens to be extremely fun and excellent work).

“To work on an iconic piece of Canadian work has also been so fun. I hope everyone will come see these amazing young people work and invest in the future of the arts!”

Waiting for Guffman meets High School Musical in One Small Step, a hilarious backstage comedy from Dora-nominated writers Anika Johnson and Barbara Johnston.

When their annual musical is cancelled, a group of high school drama students decide to write one of their own - but in order to get the money they need from city hall, it has to be about something Canadian.

The result? The Hadfield Follies: An Out of this World Journey Through the Life and Times of Astronaut Chris Hadfield.

On their way to opening night, this ambitious group of misfits learn about teamwork, tenacity, and the surprising parallels between high school drama and space exploration.

One Small Step opens at the Sudbury Theatre Centre May 11 and runs until May 16. The show is 1.5 hours in length.

Tickets are available at $15 (+tax) for youth and $30 (+HST) for adults.

Tickets are also available for the upcoming YES Theatre shows Chicago, The Music of the Beatles, Peter Pan and Oliver! Head to yestheatre.com or phone the FCR Sudbury Theatre Centre Box Office.
