1943-2024
It is with heavy hearts we announce the loss of Neil John Simmie, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 6, 2024.
Devoted husband of Olive Fraser (nee Bibbey), his wife of 57 years. Beloved father of Shawn (Lynne), Ian (Vani), Erin (Mike), Megan (Brent) and Jeff (Claire). Loving, tender Grandpa of Nigel, Sonya, Rohan, Jai, Adelle, Owen, Maya, Lainey, Addy, Gabriel, Dakota, and Carter. Dear brother of Drew (Louise), Grant (Monica) and his favourite sister Marilyn (Keith). Predeceased by his loving parents Alma and Wilfrid Simmie and Agnes Jane Bibbey, who was like a second mother to him. Neil lived in several cities across Canada before he settled down in Sudbury, where he met the love of his life, his rock. Together they opened their nurturing home to many foster children for over 23 rewarding years.
He was the best dad who always had advice to guide his children and supported them in following their chosen paths. At the age of 19, Neil began teaching for the Sudbury District School Board, where he was known for his patience, sense of humour and his captivating storytelling. After 35 years of teaching, Neil travelled the world in his retirement and loved experiencing new cultures and adventures. He loved to putter at the cottage where he famously joked that quitting time was noon, then he would relish sitting on the dock with a glass of red wine. His greatest enjoyment came from being surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren. Nothing gave him more joy than sitting back and taking in the antics, happiness, and laughter of his loved ones.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre who loved and cared for Neil and who supported our family through this difficult journey.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Neil’s memory to the Anne Germond Fund through The Church of the Ascension would be greatly appreciated.

A service with celebration of Neil’s life will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, 2:00pm, at The Church of the Ascension, 1476 Sparks Street, Sudbury, ON, P3A 2E1, with refreshments and
“storytelling” to follow.
