K-9 unit locates impaired driver who fled OPP on foot

The driver, a 20-year-old Sudbury man, fled from police first in his vehicle and then on foot

The K-9 unit had to be called in to find a man accused of impaired driving who fled his vehicle after being pulled over by the OPP on Highway 17. 

Shortly after 9 a.m. April 25, the Manitoulin OPP received multiple complaints regarding the erratic driving of a vehicle on Highway 17. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. 

Upon speaking with the driver, the driver fled from police and continued down the highway. A second attempt was made by police to stop the vehicle, which was successful, resulting in the driver then fleeing on foot.

The Manitoulin OPP with the assistance of the North East Region Canine Unit commenced a search and located the driver. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment.

The accused, a 20-year-old Sudbury man, has been charged with: 

  • Dangerous operation
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Fail to stop for police
  • Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on June 10, 2024.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
