Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Superheroes gearing up to surprise little heroes this weekend:

For the third consecutive year, officers from the Greater Sudbury Police (GSPS) Tactical Unit will be dressed as superheroes as they rappel down Health Sciences North (HSN) this weekend. As they their way down the building, the officers/superheroes surprise patients in the pediatric unit and NICU. Then, they greet the little heroes in attendance outdoors (children are encouraged to dress up this Sunday!). All proceeds from the event help to "save the day" at HSN's pediatric department annually. Every $10 donation "purchases" a foot of rope that helps donations to reach kids at the hospital. Sudburians that attend will be able to decorate their own superhero cape and decorate teal pumpkins that day. Barbecue following the event is provided by Rock Garden Care Marerk Hospitality Inc. Superhero Sponsor this year is Vale, and Rappel Sponsors are Faiella Financial Group, P&Ms Kouzzina, RBC, and SHARE. Viewing space is limited, so be sure to get there early. Parking is available for spectators at Health Sciences North for a fee.

Inventor secures funding for Northern-made lubricant

A St. Joseph Island entrepreneur has secured the backing of a major investor following his Oct. 25 appearance on the Dragons’ Den TV show.

Bill Betournay and partner Jeff Greco agreed to partner with Canadian businessman Jim Treliving – best known as the owner of the Boston Pizza restaurant chain – for 50 per cent of their company, STUFFF Lubricants.

STUFFF Lubricants is a series of environmentally friendly lubricants and degreasers made from used canola oil.

Betournay discovered the benefits of canola oil as a lubricant about four years ago while looking for something to loosen up a seized part on his truck. Read the full story, here: https://www.sudbury.com/local-news/inventor-secures-funding-for-northern-made-lubricant-1100818

Remember the sacrifice: It's time to make your poppy donation, Greater Sudbury

This year's poppy campaign is underway, and there are 37,000 poppies to distribute throughout the City  of Greater Sudbury. Mayor Brian Bigger officially declared Oct. 26 to Nov. 11 (Remembrance Day) as Poppy Days in the city. He helped raise the poppy flag at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 in Minnow Lake on Friday. Gisele Pharand, chair of the poppy campaign, said Legion members and volunteers are out tagging major locations across the city. Last year's campaign raised about $60,000 at Branch 76 alone, but more than $250,000 was raised zone-wide, which includes 12 branches of the Legion. The money supports veterans and their families. The money is also supporting Operation Service Dog Access, which helps veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder. Branch 76 wants to raise enough money to have a dog in Sudbury, and it takes $22,000 to train each of them, Pharand said.
