The staff at Greater Sudbury Utilities (GSU) recently raised $3,370 for the Sudbury Food Bank as part of their annual staff fundraiser in support of the Edgar Burton Food Drive.

GSU said in a press release its staff look forward to this event every year leading up to Christmas, and usually amass a respectable pile of nonperishable goods. This is the second year the company has moved the food drive online due to COVID-19.

“Christmas is a time where it’s nice to see the community coming together and supporting each other,” said board chair Mark Signoretti. “I’m proud of the staff at GSU for continuing this annual tradition and for making the fundraiser a priority, year after year.”

Donations will go directly to the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive/Sudbury Food Bank.

“Of course, 2021 has been another challenging year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and GSU staff were eager to help brighten the holidays for people in the area,” said the company in its news release.

The Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive supports the Sudbury Food Bank and provides a quarter of the food bank's yearly needs. The food and money collected is always a vital component of the food drive's efforts to fight hunger and feed hope in the community. Edgar Burton, a Vale employee, and member of the United Steelworkers Local 6500, started the annual food drive 33 years ago. The campaign has grown to include hundreds of businesses, organizations, and schools.
