Six active wildland fires in the Northeast Fire Region

There are two fires in the Greater Sudbury area, including a 2.8-hectare fire west of Killarney Provincial Park and a 0.5-hectare fire east of Killarney

There are six active wildland fires in the Northeast Fire Region, the province announced in a media release issued on Saturday evening.

These include two fires in the Greater Sudbury area, both located south of the city.

A fire called Sudbury 13 (SUD013) is a 2.8-hectare fire considered “being held.” It is located approximately nine kilometres north of the community of Killarney and along the shore just west of the boundary of Killarney Provincial park. 

Smoke is visible in the area, and helicopter traffic may be seen overhead.

There are two FireRanger crews committed to this fire.

A fire called North Bay 7 (NOR007) is a 0.5-hectare fire which is under control. This fire is located at the west end of Porcupine Lake between Mashkinonje and French River Provincial Parks.

Other fires in the Northeast Fire Region include: 

  • Sault Ste. Marie 5 (SAU005) was confirmed early Saturday evening approximately five kilometres west of Goulais River Provincial Park. It measures 0.3 hectares and is considered held.
  • Algonquin Park 1 (APK001) is a 0.1 hectare fire that is being held. This fire is located near Provoking Lake, approximately two kilometres south of Highway 60 and 21 kilometres northwest of Whitney. One FireRanger crew is committed to this fire, and it is considered under control.
  • Timmins 7 (TIM007) was a 0.1 hectare fire that was confirmed early Saturday afternoon and called out a few hours later. This fire was located in the southern part of Pharand lake, approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Timmins.
  • Cochrane 8 (COC008) is a 35 hectare fire that is being observed. This fire is located approximately 57.5 kilometres northwest of Moosonee.
  • Cochrane 9 (COC009) is a 6,022-hectare fire that is being observed. This fire is located east of Parson Lake and eight kilometres west of the Quebec border.

Fire hazards vary from low to high across the Northeast Region, and is considered high for Sault Ste. Marie, Elliot Lake, Espanola, Greater Sudbury, and West Nipissing, with the surrounding areas seeing a moderate fire hazard.
