The federal Ministry of Transport announced more than $500,000 in funding for two airports in Northeastern Ontario on Nov. 16.

Announced by Nickel Bel MP Marc Serré and Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe, the funding will allow Moosonee Airport and Greater Sudbury Airport to purchase equipment to help maintain safe operations at the facilities.

In Moosonee, $382,500 will purchase a grader to be used for snow and ice removal on airside surfaces such as runways, taxiways and aprons. In Greater Sudbury, the $163,625 in funding will purchase new wildlife control fencing to keep deer, coyotes, foxes and black bears off runways and other areas.

“Safety is always paramount in aviation and the Greater Sudbury Airport is grateful for the funds  provided by Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program toward our wildlife fencing  control,” Giovanna Verrilli, CEO of the Greater Sudbury Airport. “As airports in regional markets continue to push for faster recovery, and as an airport reliant  on being financially self-sufficient, we always welcome any support from the Government of  Canada.”

Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) provides federal funding to help eligible airports finance capital projects that will help them maintain safety.
